Self Dump

You can manage large waste items more by making use of Chicago’s landfill options, especially if you’re looking for easy and affordable ways to get rid of bigger waste.

When you learn about which landfills around Chicago can give you self-dumping, it can save you some time and money. It also helps you stay within the city’s guidelines.

So let’s talk about the details!

What Is Self-Dumping?

When you take your waste directly to a landfill without a garbage collection service, it is called self-dumping and this strategy has a few benefits. You save on costs by staying away from collection fees and you get to choose when to dump your waste. Basically, you set your own schedule without needing to wait for those weekly pick-ups.

There are nearly 100 reported dump locations on the Chicago website which can be super confusing but many aren’t even in business or don’t accept self drop-offs. I’ve seen that this information can really help make the process smoother for you. It’s not fun to show up to a place with a bunch of things to dump only to find out they’re not open to the public or closed.

Giant Map

If you think about a big home renovation, you’re probably going to end up with piles of debris. When you hire a garbage collection service for that, the kind of volume can be expensive. With self-dumping, you load up your truck and head to the landfill. You pay based on the weight of your waste and you’re done! It is sometimes a more manageable and affordable option – especially for bigger items.

But it’s not all easy or simple. Self-dumping will need physical work. So you’ll have to think about the effort it takes to load, transport and unload all of that waste. Honestly, just thinking about it could make your back hurt!

On top of that, you have to follow the landfill’s rules exactly. Every site has its own regulations – some will charge extra for items like mattresses and tires and they may not even accept some parts.

So, why could you use self-dumping instead of hiring a service? You could have specific requirements. Just to give you an example, if you’re a business handling particular items that a garbage truck won’t pick up, then self-dumping could be a great option.

Where can you do this around Chicago? TAZ Disposal in McCook is one option. They allow self-dumping and charge you based on your waste’s weight. Melrose Park Landfill is another place you can go. Each location has its own set of rules and fees so you will need to check their guidelines before heading over. We’ll talk more about these two in a minute.

Always think about the choices you have in front of you. Weigh the convenience of setting your own schedule and saving money against the physical work and strict landfill rules. It is really about finding the right balance between effort and cost. If you go with one strategy or the other, it depends mainly on your situation.

Next, let’s take a look at where Chicago’s landfills are located.

Where Are Chicago’s Landfills Located?

When it comes to self-dumping in Chicago, you should start with looking at the landfill’s location. When you pick a place near your home or job site, it saves you on time, fuel and effort – this choice makes things go smoother and keeps your day moving efficiently.

First there’s TAZ Disposal in McCook which is fairly close to Chicago. It’s a popular place among contractors and residents. You’ll likely pay around $60 per ton, though there are extra fees for specific items like mattresses or tires. Since it’s nearby you won’t deal with long drives. Always double-check the operating hours and latest traffic before you head out. After all, you don’t want to arrive and find it closed causing unnecessary stress.

The second choice is the Melrose Park Dump located off Lake Street in Melrose Park, IL. Your vehicle gets weighed before and after dumping to choose the charge. It’s an affordable site and also conveniently close to Chicago. It’ll save you time for other tasks. You could want to check traffic conditions too. A quick look could save you from getting stuck in long jams.

When picking a landfill, you should think about the travel distance. Closer locations mean less time in traffic and less stops at the gas station – that means you’ll have more time for what really matters. Besides, the landfill’s operating hours should line up with your schedule. No one wants to show up only to find the gates locked.

Usually speaking, traffic conditions especially during peak times can faster become a nightmare. A quick glance at a traffic app can help you stay away from sitting in endless waiting. Also, remember the kind of vehicle you’re planning to use. Some landfills are better suited for bigger trucks or trailers and it’s helpful to make sure the site is able to manage your vehicle – this way you can stay away from any last-minute complications.

Livingston Landfill, owned by Republic Services, is another option but about 100 miles outside of the city. If staying close is a priority you’ll probably want to keep this as a last resort.

Just be sure you’ve finished your waste the right way before you head to the landfills – you’ll be happy you did!

How to Prepare Waste for Landfills?

When you throw away waste in Chicago landfills there are a few steps you should make sure to follow first. You need to sort your waste at home to make your dumping process easier when you get to the landfill. This makes the job much more manageable.

First, you should start with separating recyclables. Separate paper, plastic, glass and metal from your general waste. Local recycling rules sometimes can vary, so you need to check what’s accepted in your area. Just to give you an example, not all types of plastics are recyclable everywhere. It is important because following local guidelines helps to cut down on unnecessary waste. Once you find out what can and cannot be recycled, you will end up saving yourself time and effort.

Also, you need to find and sort out any hazardous parts. That means things like acids, bases, chemicals, batteries and electronics. Just to give you an example, dilute acids and bases with water before disposal (unless you’re on a septic system). From my experience, when you handle hazardous waste you can stay away from accidents and environmental damage.

Prepare

Also remember to separate any bulk waste too like furniture and appliances. Use heavy-duty bags for other types of waste. This helps stay away from spills or injuries. When you take the time to separate bulk waste, you will find that landfill visits go much faster and safer as a result.

For cooking oils that you want to throw away, combine them with absorbent parts like cat litter. This turns them into a manageable form that you can double-bag. This easy trick helps stay away from nasty spills. You should also make sure to label hazardous waste containers the right way because poor labeling can cause expensive fines or even being turned away at the landfill. When you label everything the right way, it makes sure you’re following the rules and smooths out the whole disposal process. Besides, accurate labels help landfill staff manage waste safely.

You need to follow local regulations closely for waste disposal. Sometimes, there are special collection events in Chicago for items like thermometers or chemicals.

When you sort and pack your waste the right way, it can really speed up the whole dumping process. When you get to the landfill and already have everything neatly organized, it makes your trip so much easier. Also, heavy-duty bags are always a good idea to stay away from any unpleasant surprises. Efficient sorting and packing cause smoother landfill visits and those heavy-duty bags will help you stay away from leaks and injuries.

Let’s talk briefly about items you cannot dump. This knowledge helps you stay away from fines and legal issues. Once you have learned about prohibited items, it’s much easier to make sure you’re following the landfill rules.

What Items Are Not Allowed?

You’ll want to think about a few things before you load up your truck to haul junk to the landfill in Chicago. You can’t just dump anything in there. Electronics, chemicals and construction waste are sometimes a no-go. And since landfill space is limited when you throw hazardous parts in there it doesn’t really help.

It’s important to be aware of what can’t legally go to the landfill. Just to give you an example, electronics like computers and TVs are a no-go. When you recycle them at designated electronic waste collection centers it is actually a much better option. It is eco-friendly and keeps you in line with the rules.

Items Not Allowed

Always remember chemicals and hazardous parts like motor oil, antifreeze, pesticides and household cleaners also can’t just be tossed into the landfill.

Most people don’t realize construction waste is another category you can’t ignore. Things like asbestos, treated wood and large amounts of concrete can’t be thrown away in a regular landfill run. If you try slipping asbestos into a landfill you could end up in big trouble. You don’t want to be that person who gets caught doing that, trust me.

Remember automotive parts like car batteries, tires and fluids need special handling too. You should recycle tires at special centers and take batteries and fluids to auto shops.

When it comes to organic things like yard waste and food scraps, compost or municipal waste collection services are a much better choice. When you dump them in a landfill it creates methane – a really strong greenhouse gas. That extra step to compost is worth it in the long run, trust me.

Other items that shouldn’t go into landfill include fluorescent bulbs, mercury-containing items, medical waste and large appliances. I’ve heard of people tossing flfluorescent bulb with their regular trash and had to tell them that it was illegal. Those need to go to specific recycling centers.

Also, illegal dumping comes with legal consequences. You can read my post on fly dumping here.

So, before you head to the landfill, double-check what you’re hauling and think about the alternatives. Chicago cracks down on these things. It’s always better to be safe than sorry!

Get Rid of That Junk!

Think about the complexities of self-dumping. You’ll realize that even though the option can save you money and gives you more control over your schedule, it has its own set of challenges. When you finish the transportation and follow the landfill rules it can feel a little intense – especially if you’re tackling this for the first time. You also need to make for the possibility of getting stuck in long lines or even being turned away because of improperly finished waste. So, this extra preparation really matters because it helps make sure your experience at the landfill goes more smoothly.

When thinking about the physical effort involved as well – loading and unloading isn’t exactly easy and can be pretty exhausting. You could even question if the money saved is really worth the sore muscles and the potential danger of injury.
