Carpet is heavier and dirtier than it looks: a room's worth with padding is several hundred pounds of dust, staples and whatever soaked in over the years. We've handled 264 carpet jobs in the last 24 months — sometimes as the tear-out crew before a flooring install, often just hauling the rolls a contractor left behind, and frequently as part of a flooded-basement cleanup.
We cut carpet into manageable strips, roll and tape it, pull the padding and tack strips, and sweep the subfloor. Carpet isn't recyclable in the Chicago market, so it goes to a licensed disposal facility; we separate any metal.
