Nobody will take the piano. Not the school, not the church, not the neighborhood group. It weighs 500 pounds and it's in the basement. We've moved 90 of them in the last two years, and we'd be glad to move yours.
Old pianos are famously hard to give away, since nobody can move them, and they can't go in the trash. That leaves removal. We've hauled 90 pianos in the last 24 months, including uprights down from third-floor walk-ups and grands out of Gold Coast condos. Our crews come with piano boards, straps and enough people to do it safely, and honestly, a piano down three flights is the kind of challenge they love.
Most pianos are disposed of: the cast-iron plate and strings are recycled as scrap (that's most of the weight), and the wood case is disposed of properly. If a piano is truly playable and in good condition, we'll say so and suggest trying to re-home it first, and we'll tell you honestly if it isn't worth the effort.

They take a look at everything and give you one number that covers the labor, loading, hauling and disposal. There's no obligation, so if it doesn't work for you, they simply leave and there's no charge.
The crew carries everything out from wherever it sits, loads it up, and sweeps up after themselves. Most jobs are finished right then and there.
Once everything is loaded and swept, the crew takes payment and emails you a receipt with before-and-after photos, so you can see the job is complete.

Occasionally. Playable, tuned pianos in good cosmetic condition are sometimes accepted by schools, churches or community programs, but demand is very low and they usually ask you to pay for the move. Most uprights over 30 years old have no takers. We'll give you an honest read.
The cast-iron harp and steel strings (most of the weight) are recycled as scrap. The wooden case and keys are disposed of at a licensed facility.
We're a removal service rather than a piano mover. If you'd like the piano moved intact to another home, a piano moving company is the right call, and we're happy to recommend one.
